Routing
Terms and Technology
Routers or Layer 3 Switches are
special computing devices used to forward traffic between IP sub-networks.
These devices are concerned not only with the source and destination
address of each unit of information (a packet), but also with the
actual path that each packet takes through a network.
Routers are typically used whenever
dedicated leased line connections (special telecommunications line
services that are connected all the time (T1/E1, fractional T1/E1,
frame relay, etc) are made to the Internet.
Layer 3 Switches is hardware based
routing and typical used where wire speed routing is required.
MultiLayer switched environment combine Layer 2 switching and Layer
3 routing functionality
